Leather cowboy hats in Wellington, Florida

Wellington is horse country, and a leather hat suits it. It keeps the sun off, holds up to daily wear, and every one of our hats has a chin cord to keep it on in the wind. All nine styles are 100% cowhide, and you can try every one on at our store in The Mall at Wellington Green.

How to find your hat size

Run a tape measure around your head, just above your ears and eyebrows. If you fall between two sizes, take the smaller one, because leather gives a little with wear.

  • S: hat size 7, 21.5 to 22 inches (55 to 56 cm)
  • M: hat size 7 1/8, 22.5 to 23 inches (57 to 58 cm)
  • L: hat size 7 1/4, 23.25 to 23.75 inches (59 to 60 cm)
  • XL: hat size 7 3/8, 24 inches (61 cm)

Not every hat comes in every size; each hat's page shows the sizes on the shelf. Our Hat Sizes page has the full chart.

Leather vs felt vs straw

Felt hats are usually steamed into shape by a hatter, and straw is the lightest choice for heat. Leather holds its shape and adjusts slightly by hand: it starts firm, softens with wear, and the brim relaxes and keeps the shape you give it. Several of our styles have vents in the crown for airflow.

Picking a style

  • Braided bands: Tan Braided (upturned brim), Black Braided (taller crown, flatter brim) and Dark Brown Braided (flat braid, rolled brim).
  • Conchos and studs: Silver Concho (silver buffalo conchos), Distressed Concho (rubbed-back olive brown, antique brass rosettes) and Studded Band (burnished tan, brass conchos).
  • Statement hats: Bullet Band (brass bullet casings), White Leather (wide brim that curls up at the sides) and Embossed Snakeskin (a snake pattern pressed into the leather, $130).

All the others are $115.

Caring for a leather hat

Brush off dust with a soft-bristled brush or a dry cloth, and never use harsh chemicals or solvents. If it gets wet, blot it and let it air-dry away from heat and direct sun; never use a hair dryer, since too much water or heat can stain or warp leather. Let it dry and rest upside down on its crown or on a hat stand, so the brim keeps its shape, and store it somewhere cool and dry.

Questions we get asked

What size cowboy hat do I need?

Measure around your head just above your ears and eyebrows. 21.5 to 22 inches is an S (7), 22.5 to 23 is an M (7 1/8), 23.25 to 23.75 is an L (7 1/4), and 24 is an XL (7 3/8). Between sizes, take the smaller one, because leather gives with wear.

Do leather cowboy hats stretch?

A little. A new leather hat sits firm and gives slightly as you wear it, which is why we suggest the smaller size if you're in between.

Can I shape the brim of a leather hat?

Slightly, by hand. Our hats hold their shape, and with wear the brim relaxes and keeps the set you give it.

Can you wear a leather cowboy hat in the rain?

A light shower is fine. If it gets soaked, blot it and let it air-dry away from heat and direct sun, resting upside down on its crown.

Is the snakeskin hat real snakeskin?

No. The snake pattern is pressed into the leather, so it's an embossed cowhide hat.

Can I try the hats on before buying?

Yes. All nine styles are at our store in The Mall at Wellington Green, Wellington, Florida.
