How to tell real alligator belly leather

Look for wide, even tiles in rows across the front: the belly is the softest, most even part of the skin, and the tiles change size gradually toward the sides. A print or an embossed cowhide repeats the same pattern; a real skin never does, which is why the next alligator briefcase we get will look a little different from this one.

Caring for an alligator briefcase

Wipe it with a soft, dry cloth after use. Two or three times a year, work in a little conditioner made for exotic skins, in the direction of the tiles. Keep it out of hot cars and direct sun, and if it's caught in the rain, blot it and let it dry slowly at room temperature. Don't overload it, and store it upright with paper inside, in a cotton bag or pillowcase, so the flap closes cleanly.
