How to tell real exotic leather

Each genuine skin has a mark you can see and feel:

  • Ostrich: raised quill bumps where the feathers grew.
  • Stingray: tiny hard beads, often with a cream diamond down the spine.
  • Python: its natural scale markings, so no two are alike.
  • Crocodile and alligator: rows of tiles. The belly is smooth; the hornback has a raised, bony ridge.

Embossed cowhide is only pressed with a pattern. We label those pieces "embossed" and keep them out of this collection. For the difference between alligator and crocodile, see our Exotic Belts guide.

What each exotic costs

  • Exotic wallets: $150 to $250 (card case $150, bifolds $185, clutch wallets $195 to $250).
  • Ready-made exotic belts: $275 to $400, buckle included, cut to your size.
  • Exotic handbags: $480 to $995.
  • Alligator Briefcase: $1,100.

Exotics cost more than cowhide because far fewer skins are produced, each one is graded by hand, and a single scar can ruin a hide.

Caring for exotic leather

Wipe it with a soft, dry cloth. Every few months, rub in a little conditioner made for exotic skins, in the direction of the scales. If it gets wet, blot it and let it air-dry away from heat and sun. Never use mink oil or household oils.

Shipping, and California

Every exotic piece is $100 or more, so it ships free in the U.S. California law doesn't allow python or lizard products to be sold there, so we can't ship those to California addresses. Alligator, crocodile, ostrich and stingray ship there as normal.

Yes. Every piece in this collection is the genuine skin named on it, and you're welcome to see and feel it in our Wellington store before you buy.

How much does an exotic leather wallet cost?

Our exotic wallets run from $150 to $250, in python, stingray, ostrich, crocodile and lizard.

Can you ship exotic leather to California?

Alligator, crocodile, ostrich and stingray, yes. California law doesn't allow python or lizard products to be sold there, so we can't ship those to California addresses.
